  1. I have not been able to find the original source for this. Most uses – and variants – turned up in web searches seem to lead back to Clive James, for example in this BBC article, but no reference is given. It reads like the kind of thing he might have said – perhaps in one of his wartime editorials for Combat – but that’s not the same as evidence that he did.
